What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback is a non-invasive form of biofeedback that teaches the brain to self-regulate, using realtime EEG (electroencephelography) to measure brainwave activity.

Quantitative Electroencephalogram / Brain Map

The first step to providing a custom treatment plan, is obtaining a QEEG (Quantitative Electroencephalogram). QEEG is a procedure used to measure electrical activity in the brain. Brainwaves are broken down by frequency, with different brainwaves being responsible for different types of brain activity. Our brains need to access all of the different frequencies in order to function in a healthy way. The QEEG assesses where there is imbalance of these frequencies and in which parts of the brain. This helps clinicians identify the underlying physiological reason for symptoms. A QEEG recording is done by applying an electrocap and recording raw data, while a client reclines comfortably in a chair, listening to music. The raw data is then processed through specialized software, creating a report or “brain map”. Once the report has been generated, you will sit down with a clinician to review the findings and discuss your treatment plan.

Neurofeedback

The next step is to begin your neurofeedback sessions. Neurofeedback is a type of brain therapy that helps correct the imbalances identified in the QEEG. The brain is neuroplastic, meaning it has the ability to reorganize its structure and function. Unfortunately this means that physical injuries, toxins, viruses, emotional experiences, and trauma can have a negative impact on how the brain functions. However, at the same time, nutrition, exercise, learning and most therapies can impact the brain in a positive way, with healing and growth. There are different types of neurofeedback protocols, however they all use a system based upon operant conditioning, with auditory and visual rewards. All neurofeedback protocols create lasting change through long term potentiation of healthier neural pathways.
